A beautifully ugly breakfast companion

Mark Shutt-10202Ugly, creepy, bizarre, and yes… a little bit beautiful. Not my normal type of companion to welcome in a new day, but yesterday brought along some intriguing breakfast company. After waking up, I made my first customary stop of the day- The window… to survey my little slice of the world and get a feel for the coming hours. Imagine my surprise when, sitting on the branch normally reserved for cute little sparrows and songbirds, I came beak to beak with…This. My first thought was that the Nizzards were preparing an attack on the dyke and I should go get my stilts. Fortunately, coffee brought a little sanity and I realized he was just waiting for a few rays of sun. Hmm, maybe we do have something in common. Anyway, while we had breakfast, he showed off and struck a few poses for me. When he realized we weren’t going to offer him any breakfast he gave up and left.  Too bad for him.  The cat isn’t dead yet and I’m sure the kids are too tough and stringy for his taste anyway.

More poses for your enjoyment…

People watching extravaganza

Mark Shutt-0517cropI don’t know about you, but I like people… at a distance. Not that I dis-like people (usually), I just prefer to be in a corner, on a balcony, or maybe even in a glass box. Somewhere to observe without having to interact. I don’t know (and don’t care to know) what this says about my psychological state, but I do enjoy watching people.

Mark Shutt-0539And while its alright to watch people you know, but its much better to watch complete strangers. There is no need to overlook peculiarities (as you tend to do with friends), instead you can simply revel in the weirdness of people. Oddities get odder and strange habits are magnified when people think they are unobserved.

It doesn’t really matter if you are waiting at a red light at rush hour, sitting in a cafe in Paris, or sunning yourself on the Spanish steps in Rome, the world is full of great people-watching places.  We recently discovered one of those places not long ago.Mark Shutt-0547  Westside Market in Cleveland is a great place for go for fresh fruit, vegetables, handmade pasta, pig heads and more, but it really shines as a place to watch people.  Streams of them. Every nationality, every socioeconomic standing, every peculiarity, all stirred into one big pot.  Wander the isles if you want to rub elbows, stand Mark Shutt-0560in a corner if you wish- but for the pièce de résistance , grab a custom filled cannoli, a fresh coffee (or both) and head for the balcony.  The dingy little stair-way in the corner heads to the best spot in the house. A people watching extravaganza. Lean on the rail, find a seat- whatever suits your fancy- but settle in and enjoy people in all their us-suspecting, oddity laden, habit driven interesting-ness. Just don’t forget- someone else may be watching…
